Description
County, east of I-95, north of Indiantown Rd. It is currently comprised of 22.8 acres
of county owned lands north of the C-18 canal, and a long-term management least
over an additional 30 acres is pending. The site contains four native ecosystems:
mesic flatwoods, scrubby flatwoods, hydric hammock, and tidal swamp.
Animals: Many listed animal species have been observed on the site such as:gopher tortoise, West-Indian manatee, American redstart, little blue heron, yellowcrowned
night-heron, and osprey.
Plants: Many listed species of plants have been observed on the site such as:tiny polygala, wild cotton, common wild pine, giant wild pine, Simpson stopper,
cinnamon fern, and royal fern.
Site History and Public Use: . The county owned portions of the site wereacquired in two separate purchases in July 2002 and September 2003 with funds
from the Palm beach County Conservation lands Bond issue referendum of March
9, 1999. Historically, fire exclusion, exotic pest plant invasions, hydrologic
alterations, and canal construction have impacted the site. Key management
activities will focus on the eradication and control of non-native invasive plants, the
reintroduction of fire, and hydrologic restoration. It is managed as part of a
countywide system of natural areas, protected to maintain the diversity of biological
communities and species in Palm Beach County, and it is open to the public for
environmental education, scientific research, and passive recreation activities such
as hiking, bird watching, and photography.
