Day-long adventures – at least once a month – where we seek out the wilds of South Florida – swamp walks, coastal explorations, forest hikes and more!  Everglades, Big Cypress, Jupiter, Fl. Keys and beyond.  Get outside with your family and take a trip a bit further away for the entire day and learn about natural and wild Florida.  Learn the natural and cultural history of our beautiful state and get to know where you live. For the whole family – all ages!  Fridays 10/10:30am to 3/3:30pm. Dates shown below.

Nature Friday Family Field Trip Particulars

  • These trips require advance registration and payment .
  • Family cost includes program and materials and is based on a family with one child or more.  When there is more than one child, children under age four are free of charge.
  • Transportation and entrance fees are NOT included in program cost.
  • No refunds are given, credits will be offered or considered, based on circumstances.
  • Severe weather and circumstances may cause trip to be postponed or canceled for a credit or a refund, but typically rain or shine.

Friday, September 15 – Turtle Tracks and Bird Feet…Life on the Barrier Island!  A day trip to the Loggerhead Marinelife Sanctuary and John D. MacArthur State Beach…visit the sea turtles, explore the sandy shores, tropical hammocks and mangrove forests of this biological treasure.  Hunt for turtle tracks and learn how they are created.  Observe birds of the barrier island and learn how they find their niche.  All day trip to Juno and Riviera Beach – exploring, playing and getting wet are required.

Friday, October 13 – Blowing Rocks and Shallow Lagoons…Life in the Shallows!   A day trip to Nature Conservancy’s Blowing Rocks Preserve and Dubois Lagoon in Jupiter…discover the unique and rare beauty of the jutting Anastasia limestone rock formations on the  beach, explore the shallows of the lagoons and search for critters…crabs, jellies, fishes, birds and MORE!   All day trip to Jupiter – exploring, playing and getting wet are required.

Friday, November 17 – Cypress Trees and Cypress Knees…Life in the Freshwater Wetlands, Trip #1 to Big Cypress…Out to Oasis for another amazing swamp walk in the Dome!   A day trip to Big Cypress National Preserve…step into the heart of the everglades…immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of the ancient cypress swamps by stepping into the waters.  Discover the wonders of these ancient trees and witness the pristine beauty of this unique environment.  All day trip to Ochopeee area (Tamiami Trail west) – a sense of wonder and adventure is encouraged for this fabulous trip into the swamp…wet feet are required!

Friday, January 19, 2018 Strands, Swamps and Prairies…Life from the Uplands to the Wetlands.  A day swamp tromp trip to Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve…the “Amazon of North America”..,step into the heart of the everglades…immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of the ancient cypress swamps by stepping into the waters, hiking the upland forests, and walking the tranquil prairies.  Fakahatchee Strand is the only place in the world where bald cypress trees and royal palms share the orchid-laden forest canopy. It is a haven for wildlife, Florida panthers still pursue white-tailed deer from the uplands across the wetlands. Florida black bears and Eastern indigo snakes, Everglades minks and diamondback terrapins can still be found here and the resident and migratory bird life is spectacular! Discover the wonders of this cypress strand.  All day trip to the Western Everglades area Highway 29, on the way to Naples – a sense of wonder and adventure is encouraged for this fabulous trip into the swamp…wet feet are required!

Friday, February 16 Meandering Rivers, Sparkling Waters and Water Bugs…Life in the Freshwater Rivers, Swamps, and Marshes!  Head north and west to the Northern Everglades Ecosystem…to the pristine Grassy Waters Nature Preserve.   Grassy Waters Preserve remains a pristine remnant of the once great Everglades system. A mosaic of wetlands, tree islands, and forested hammocks, and is home to a variety of native wildlife. Commonly sighted species including the everglades snail kite, wood stork, white ibis, great blue heron, white tailed deer, otter, bobcat, and alligator.  Get your nets in the water to search for crawdads and water spiders and get your feet wet as you enter the crystal clear waters of this gorgeous watershed.  All day trip to the Grassy Waters in the West Palm Beach area…a sense of adventure and wet feet are required!

Friday, March 2 Urban Wilderness…Cypress Domes, Freshwater and Suburbs…a Day Trip to the Apoxee Urban Wilderness Park.  Hike the trails – dry or wet – through the pristine cypress swamps of this natural oasis in the midst of suburban sprawl.  Find out what real and natural South Florida used to be like.  Discover nature in it’s most subtle form.  All day trip to Palm Beach County, a sense of adventure, a love of walking and possible wet feet required.

Friday, March 23Sugar Sand, Scrublands and Pine Forests…Life in the Upland Forests and Scrubs!  A day trip to the scrub and Pineland forests of Riverbend Urban Wilderness and Jonathan Dickinson State Park…take a hike over the hills and through the woods as we explore the undeveloped beauty of this area.  Just an hour away is acres of forest, home to bobcats, panthers, deer, wild pigs and more.  Walk the sugar sand hills, hike along the meandering Loxahatchee River and tromp through the Pinelands as we search for signs of life and enjoy the natural beauty of south Florida.   Discover the wonders of the endangered scrub lands and pine forests.  All day trip to Jupiter area and Jonathan Dickinson State Park – a sense of wonder and adventure is encouraged for this fabulous trip…get ready to Take a Hike!Old Growth.

Friday, April 6Stone Crabs and 10,000 Islands…Life from the Freshwater to the Saltwater!  Spend the day traveling west and south to Everglades City... flow with the freshwater as it wanders from the swamps of Big Cypress and Fakahatchee Strand down into the southlands to meet with the Gulf of Mexico.  Travel west and south to a place at the edge of Florida, a hidden place full of lore and beauty, a place set back in time in so many ways.  Learn about alligator holes and ghost orchids,  stone crabs and blue crabs, mosquitoes and smugglers, and survival in a harsh, but beautiful land. All day trip to Everglades City.  A sense of wonder and adventure is required!  All day trip to the Everglades City area – on the way to Naples…stamina for an all day road trip and a sense of adventure is required!

Friday, April 20Endangered Crocodiles, Butterflies, Wood Rats and Rock Pigeons…Life in the Maritime Hardwood Hammock of the Upper Keys.   A day trip to the Dagny Johnson and John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo…take a journey south, over the bay and discover the rocky history of the upper keys.  Learn what makes a coral alive and how Parrot Fish poop out sand.  Romp through the forest, climb the mangroves, and swim amongst the fishes.   All day trip to Card Sound, Key Largo and Dagny Johnson Botanical Park and John Pennekamp State Park a sense of wonder and adventure is encouraged for this fabulous trip…get ready to explore the islands!

Friday, May 25Sunken Treasure, Islands of Sand, and Underwater Ecosystems…Life on the reefs and islands of Palm Beach.  A day trip to Blue Heron Bridge Artificial Reef and Peanut Island.  Experience life under the surface of the blue. Learn to identify marine life as you swim and search.  Travel across the water to the hidden treasures found on and around Peanut Island.  All day trip north to Palm Beach and Blue Heron Boulevard – a spirit of discovery and a willingness to swim and search is mandatory.  Come below the blue!
